VOF GlossaryAgriculture: The science, art, and business of cultivating soil, producing crops, and raising livestock; farming. Apiculture: The raising and caring of bees for commercial or agricultural purposes. Aquaculture: The science, art, and business of cultivating marine or freshwater food fish or shellfish, such as oysters, clams, salmon, and trout, under controlled conditions. Also included in aquaculture is the term "hydroponics", or the cultivation of plants in water rather than soil. Horticulture: 1. The science or art of cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants. 2. The cultivation of a garden. Silviculture: The art and science of controlling the establishment, growth, composition, health, and quality of forests and woodlands to meet the diverse needs and values of landowners and society on a sustainable basis. Sustainable Forestry Practices: Activities that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs by practicing a land stewardship ethic that integrates reforestation and the managing, growing, nurturing, and harvesting of trees for useful products with the conservation of soil, air and water quality, biological diversity, recreation, and aesthetics. Viticulture: The cultivation of grapes.
